Finding Z-Wave Parameter Device Info (Regardless of which controller you use)

Looking Up Z-Wave Device Parameters

A question came up on YouTube recently about changing Z-Wave parameters on an IQ Panel. The IQ Panel just gives you a blank field for the parameter number and a place to enter a value. Unless you already know what Parameter 5 or Parameter 17 does, you’re kind of stuck and staring into a black hole (well, if you have dark mode enabled anyway!)

That got me thinking that this is something every Z-Wave user runs into sooner or later, regardless of what controller they’re using.

Understanding what parameters and options exist is the key to maximizing the value of each of your devices!

If you’re using Home Assistant, Hubitat, Z-Box, or another controller, you’ll often get friendly parameter names and maybe a brief description. That’s definitely better than just an empty box, but it’s usually a condensed version of the manufacturer’s documentation. Even worse - sometimes it is incorrect! (I’ve seen Z-Wave JS give the wrong default values, etc.) If you really want to understand what a setting does, you’ll eventually need to find the original documentation.

In the video below I show where I usually start looking.

For example:

  • Zooz keeps excellent parameter documentation on their support site.
  • Inovelli includes theirs on the product pages.
  • Shelly organizes things a little differently, which can make them harder to find if you don’t know where to look.

I also cover a couple of resources that are useful when the manufacturer documentation is missing, incomplete, or for an older product that’s no longer well supported. Those have saved me more than once.

If you’ve ever found yourself staring at a parameter number wondering what it actually does, hopefully this saves you a little time.

Have you found a good resource I didn’t mention? Or is there a manufacturer whose documentation drives you crazy? Let everyone know in the comments. I always like finding better resources.
