Use a Zooz ZSE50 Siren With the Qolsys IQ4?

I Made the Zooz ZSE50 Siren Work With the Qolsys IQ4 (Officially Not Compatible)

The Zooz ZSE50 Siren and Chime is a great little Z-Wave noisemaker, but it ships with a polite “not compatible” warning the second you try to include it on a Qolsys IQ4 panel running Alarm.com. After my previous review I left it joined to the panel and noticed something interesting under the hood. Then I had a hunch, and that hunch turned into a fully working secondary siren on the IQ4.

The Setup

The IQ4 will not surface the ZSE50 as a switch or remote in Alarm.com. But it does expose the device’s parameters and direct associations in advanced Z-Wave settings, which is enough of a foothold to do something clever. I tested association from three different Z-Wave relays already controllable on the IQ4:

  • Zooz Zen16 multi-channel relay
  • Shelly Wave 1 Z-Wave relay
  • A third Zooz relay (the surprise winner, in the video)

What Worked

  • The Z-Wave association command does fire the ZSE50 when the right relay is on the other end.
  • Tone, volume, LED mode, and playback behavior are all settable from the IQ4 using the parameter configuration screen in the IQ.
  • Custom MP3 and WAV files load onto the ZSE50 over USB and play back when the parameter references their file number.
  • End to end works in production: arming the panel, tripping a sensor, and watching the secondary siren go off on the bench all worked exactly as you would hope.

What Didn’t (and the Surprise Fix)

  • The Zen16 association went nowhere on the IQ4. That tracks with what I have seen with multi-channel devices in this ecosystem.
  • The Shelly Wave 1 also did not fire the siren via association, even though the relay itself is fully controllable.
  • Loaded custom files reshuffle the tone index on the ZSE50, so any pre-built automation that references a tone by number needs a quick recheck.
  • One specific Zooz relay broke the deadlock and made the association stick. My favorite little relay - the ZEN58 - finally made the ZSE50 sing! The reveal, the wiring, and the parameter walkthrough are in the video.

Verdict

Yes, the ZSE50 is fully usable as a secondary siren on the IQ4 with Alarm.com, despite the official “not compatible” sticker. With the right relay paired by direct association, and a few parameters set on the ZSE50, you get a working triggered alarm that follows whatever automation already drives the relay. Plant a few of these around the house at full volume and you have real audible saturation.

I’d love to hear from you. Have you bent an “incompatible” Z-Wave device into a Qolsys panel before? Which combos worked, which crashed and burned? Drop your story in the comments, and let me know what should hit the bench next.
