ZSE43 Pre-Release Testing: Five Controllers, Full Parameter Walkthrough, and Your Questions Answered

Zooz invited me into the beta program for the updated Zooz Z-Wave 800 LR ZSE43 Tilt / Shock Sensor and sent over a pre-production sample. (Thank you Zooz!) So, we spent some quality time the bench, and any findings went back to Zooz for input while they finalize the release version.

The video is up now:

What I tested

Five Z-Wave controllers, because “it works” can mean different things depending on what you plug it into:

  • Zooz Z-Box
  • Hubitat with the legacy Z-IP radio
  • Hubitat with Z-Wave JS
  • Home Assistant
  • Qolsys IQ Panel 4

Full parameter walkthrough, direct association groups, and automations review on each platform.

The part that was mildly surprising

Calibration. This device will behave inconsistently if you skip it, and the two methods are not equivalent in practice. I cover calibration via parameters at 15:08 and via button press at 29:47. If you only watch two chapters, watch those.

Your questions

We had someone (thank you @Criterion67 !) post questions in the ZSE43 thread here on the forum. To be sure I didn’t miss one - I rolled them all into the video at 46:19. If you want to go deeper on any answer, to ask something new, reply below.

The mini mailbox

I built a test mini mailbox so the tilt and shock triggers got exercised the way they might actually would in the field, not just by manipulating the sensor around by hand on the bench. Full parts list is in the video description if you want to build one. (And you may want to use a different mailbox - maybe plastic instead of metal! Details in the video  )

Release date

I close the video with overall findings and the release date. It’s at 50:52 if you want to jump straight there, though the findings section right before it is the context that makes the date meaningful.

Standard beta caveat applies: firmware and behavior can still change before release.

Get yours!
