(Sneak Peek): The all new Zooz Tilt / Shock Sensor ZSE43 800 LR version is HERE

The newest version of the Zooz Tilt / Shock sensor is coming soon, and we were fortunate enough to get our hands on a pre-release sample for review and testing!

This all new version of the ZSE43 has Z-Wave 800 with LR (Long Range), an upgraded acceleration sensor, bigger battery, and more. I can’t wait to get it on the bench and run it though its paces.

As always, we will connect it to a variety of hubs, including the Z-Box, Home Assistant, Hubitat and the IQ 4 Panel/alarm.com.

Here’s a first look at the sample I just received. Stay tuned for the review video!

Great timing on this one. I’ve been waiting on the ZSE43 restock and the new hardware version looks to be an upgrade. I use a ZooZ ZST39 LR dongle along with Home Assistant & Z-Wave JS. A few things I’d appreciate seeing covered in your review, and I would think others would too:

1. Does the upgraded accelerometer report an actual angle value, or is tilt still just a binary open/close state? Being able to see the angle would open up a lot of use cases beyond garage doors.

2. Is the tilt threshold configurable, and if so what’s the range? The current version trips on vertical or horizontal tilt with no adjustment I’m aware of.

3. What’s the latency from physical tilt to the report hitting the hub, and does it differ between classic mesh mode and LR mode?

4. Does it reliably catch a fast tilt and return cycle, where the device tips past threshold and comes back to level within a few seconds? That’s a different test than a garage door that stays open, and it would matter for anything monitoring a short movement event.

5. On the Z-Wave JS side: does it get identified correctly in Home Assistant out of the box, or does it come up as an unknown device pending a config file? If you can post the manufacturer ID, product type, and product ID from the node details, that would help people know what to expect at launch.

6. Do the existing configuration parameters carry over, particularly the one that lets you enable tilt only, shock only, or both, plus the shock sensitivity setting? Any new parameters added?

7. Battery: the photo shows a CR2450 rather than the CR2032 in the current (outgoing) model. Can you confirm, and is there any real world battery life estimate under frequent triggering? Also curious whether the Duracell contact issue Zooz warns about on the CR2032 XS sensors still applies here.

8. Physical dimensions of the new body, and whether the existing Zooz weatherproof case still fits it. Several of us print our own mounts and enclosures, so the exact dimensions would be super useful.

9. Operating temperature range, and any word from Zooz on outdoor tolerance with the weatherproof case.

Looking forward to the video. Thanks in advance.

Wow. That is quite the list! But I do appreciate it.

The good news is that most of this was already targeted for my standard review process. Happy to figure out the remainder and include it in the video. At the moment I’m still in the testing phase and working with Zooz support on many details. The one I have is pre-production, and hand assembled so it may be slightly different than the shipping / production unit coming out soon.

I do have the parameter list and manual for the device, and Zooz has granted me permission to share it. I just posted it.. see below…

Also I have some of your answers already if you want a sneak peek:

  1. Binary state only.
  2. Yes, see the parameter list for details (once I post it). Also it can be calibrated once in place to accommodate the actual use case without manually setting parameters.
  3. to be tested
  4. to be tested
  5. Properly identified in JS UI.
  6. not sure what you mean by ‘carry over’? Parameter list will be in my other post.
  7. Yes. CR2450 is an upgraded feature over the CR2032. No data on life expectancy that I can find.
  8. It is the same dimensions as the ZSE44.
  9. Zooz does mention the outdoor case but I don’t yet see updated published ranges for that use case. I will ask.

The review video of the Pre-Production ZSE43 sensor is now available!
